9-weeks 2 composition assignment

(worth 100 points, see 9 weeks schedule for due date)

Save the file as your last name, and then 2.  (ex:  Peck2.nwc)

Your composition be 32 measures in length, must be in 4/4, 3/4, 6/8, or 12/8 time,

and typed on an approved software notation program.

You may compose for any of the following instrument combinations:

 

*up to 8 voices.  (If for choir, it must contain lyrics that have been typed in using the software).  The following choirs are available:  SATB (may split S1/S2, etc), TTBB, or SSAA

 

*String Quartet (Violin I and II, Viola, Cello)

 

*A like-voice quartet (i.e. horn quartet, steel band, guitar ensemble, woodwind quartet, etc.)

 

*solo voice and piano (if solo voice, it must contain lyrics that have been typed in using the software)

 

*solo instrument and piano

 

*solo piano

 

q NOTE q:  If you compose anything for a transposing instrument, you must print the conductors score (in Concert pitch), NOT the instrumentalist’s score.

Must have (and in the analysis please highlight with a highlighter):

Ÿ  a Title that has been typed in using the software, and your name as composer.

Ÿ  Two different 6/4 progressions, properly used

Ÿ  Both types of secondary function ( V7/?  AND vii°7/? )

Ÿ  an +6 OR N6 chord

Ÿ  2 borrowed chords

Ÿ  a modulation (away at least once and back to the original tonic)

 

You will earn the most “musicality” points if your comp also has:

Ÿ  melodic sequences

Ÿ  good harmonic motion

Ÿ  great cadences!

Ÿ  regular triads in root position and appropriate inversions (a nice mix)

Ÿ  seventh chords in root position and appropriate inversions (a nice mix)

+5 bonus points if you use 6/8 or 12/8.

Turn in:

  • One analyzed paper copy.  Label Roman Numerals, NCT’s, all cadences, and point out your melodic sequences.
